As a former elite athlete, he is a two-time NCAA Division 1 swimming and diving champion and a two-time platform diving medalist at the World University Games. His academic achievements are equally impressive—Dr. Mazzaferro was a Rhodes Scholar National Finalist, a Walter Byers Scholar Finalist (an award given to the top three male NCAA Scholar Athletes of the year from over 250,000 athletes), and winner of the H. Boyd McWhorter Award for SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
