What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, rejuvenates the eye area by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure can treat drooping upper lids, reduce puffiness, and smooth out under-eye bags, including addressing a “tear trough” (the deep crease under the eyes that often makes individuals look tired or aged). Patients enjoy a refreshed, alert appearance by smoothing and tightening the eyelid area.
Eyelid surgery can also correct upper eyelid ptosis, a condition where the upper eyelid droops due to weakness or dysfunction of the muscles responsible for lifting the lid, such as the levator muscle or Müller’s muscle. It can lead to visual obstruction, asymmetry, and a tired or aged appearance. Treatment options include levator muscle tightening or reattachment, as well as a conjunctivo-mullerectomy (Müller’s muscle-conjunctival resection or MMCR), a procedure that corrects ptosis by removing a portion of the Müller’s muscle and the overlying conjunctiva. These surgical techniques are tailored to each patient to restore proper eyelid height, enhance vision, and create a natural, refreshed appearance.
Though eyelid surgery doesn’t directly address dark circles or crow’s feet, it can be combined with other treatments, such as brow lifts or laser resurfacing, to provide a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
